Angourie Point

Angourie Point is located on the north coast of the state of New South Wales, Australia, near the town of Yamba is regarded as one of the best point breaks of the land of kangaroos. Yamba is a small town with approximately 6000 inhabitants (according to 2006 census) but being a tourist town with great waves and on holidays the population reaches three times this number, especially on days with good waves. In Angourie, the population is 170 people (excluding visitors).

On January 12, 2007, Angourie Point became a "Surfing Reserve," as it is also known as the home of the Soul Surfer. The appearance of the peak is breathtaking, surrounded by native vegetation, and the good vibe of the local community.

Angourie is a point break wave and at low tide you need to slalow some rocks that appears in the sections near the inside. In the classic days you can get out there in the one wave and surf all the way from the point to the inside with quick sessions for high performance maneuvers and hallucinating tubes.

Beware of rocks, sharks and locals. Being a point break, it does not need many people to form the "crowd" and the "waiting list" to catch a wave can take a while sometimes, as everyone seems to surf in Angourie. The peak breathes surfing from the time at which the sun rises until the time when the sun goes down. The Locals do not like many people surfing around there, but knowing to wait for your turn, with respect, you will have your slice of the pie. The best swell is from east to northeast.

Angourie Point also appears in the famous film "Morning of the Earth" produced by Albert Falzon. This film is regarded by many as perhaps the best surf movie ever made. In the film you can see the waves at Angourie in the early 70's when the peak was still a spot of a few local soul surfers.

The region also has several waves to satisfy any surfer. Spots such as Back Beach, Pippi, Spookie, Iluka, Turners and others are sure to garantee anyone a really good surfing session.

Another attraction is the famous Green Pool and Blue Pool, which are pools of fresh water to only 20 meters from the beach. The story goes that the miners who worked in the quarries went home one night and returned the next day to find the quarry filled with water. Worth checking out in the flat days to jump from the top of the quarry.

If you go to Angourie Point, remember to keep the place clean - as you will find - and to RESPECT the local people and the enviromnment.
