Desert Point can offer barrel rides of up to 15 seconds. It is a fast wave with growing end section that can devour even the most experienced surfer. It needs a huge swell to fire up and even under those conditions, Desert Point can be unstable with tides and strong currents wreaking havoc. Check the photos of Desert Point in our photo gallery!
Desert Point is a lefthander wave and when it breaks its easily one of the best examples of the magic that results between reef, swell and wind. The problem though lies in the waves inconsistency there. Desert needs a solid South West swell to start breaking, and anything other than an offshore wind is going to seriously ruffle a very bumpy take off. Remember that these South West swell that you are looking for needs to march a long way across the Indian Ocean all the way from the bottom of South Africa and so swell decay limits the probability of these swell trains arriving with any regularity.
