Our oceans are dying. Beset by pollution and demolition industrial fishing, the magical and bountiful deep blue is turning into a barren desert.

But in the next 48 hours, governments are considering a new rescue plan -- and we can help push it through.

Shockingly, governments spend billions subsidising the commercial fishing industry to pillage our seas. The new plan would end this scandal, craft a new treaty to protect the high seas, and establish critical marine protection reserves. But Canada, the US and Japan are threatening to water down or even kill it. Our only hope is to get behind Europe to champion the idea before it's too late.

This crucial meeting is being held quietly behind closed doors at the UN. Let's break open the talks and deliver massive global support to Europe to save our oceans. Sign the urgent petition and send this to everyone -- once we hit 500,000 signatures, we'll deliver the petition straight into the meeting!

The rhino is being hunted into extinction and could disappear forever unless we act now.

Shocking new statistics show 440 rhinos were brutally killed last year in South Africa alone -- a massive increase on five years ago when just 13 had their horns hacked off. European nations could lead the world to a new plan to save these amazing creatures but they need to hear from us first!

Fueling this devastation is a huge spike in demand for rhino horns, used for bogus cancer cures, hangover remedies and good luck charms in China and Vietnam. Protests from South Africa have so far been ignored by the authorities, but Europe has the power to change this by calling for a ban on all rhino trade -- from anywhere, to anywhere -- when countries meet at the next crucial international wildlife trade summit in July.

The situation is so dire that the threat has even spread into British zoos who are on red-alert for rhino killing gangs! Let's raise a giant outcry and urge Europe to push for new protections to save rhinos from extinction. When we reach 100,000 signers, our call will be delivered in Brussels, the decision-making heart of Europe, with a crash of cardboard rhinos. Every 50,000 signatures will add a rhino to the crash -- bringing the size of our movement right to the door of EU delegates as they decide their position.

Brazilian Party celebrates Valentine's Day with style on the Gold Coast - Australia

Brazilian Party celebrates Valentine's Day with style on the Gold Coast - Australia

For those who does'nt know, Saint Valentine's Day, often simply Valentine's Day, is a holiday observed on February 14 honoring one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentinus. It was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD, and was later deleted from the General Roman Calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. It is celebrated in countries around the world, mostly in the West, although it remains a working day in all of them.

The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").

At Beach House Tavern, the date was celebrated with lots of good music, beautiful people and the best vibe of the Gold Coast night life.

Storm but classic conditions were the kick off of this week's swell.
Last Mo

Storm but classic conditions were the kick off of this week's swell.

Last Monday morning (22082011) I woke up and the weather wasn't very nice. Cloudy, raining and windy.

I packed up my photovideo equipment, grabbed my wetsuit and my old backup surfboard (The board i ride everyday was run over by a car the day before... !@#$!@$@$!%ˆˆ#, but that is another story...) and headed to the top of the Kirra hill where the Kirra Eagle watches the swell day after day 247. To my surprise the strong wind was offs-shore and the waves were pumping all the way from Snapper Rocks to Kirra.

The crowd was already there charging the waves set after set. Once i got under the "safe" shelter where i could snap some shots, I started to realise that the swell was getting better and better as the tide was coming in. So i decided to spend a couple of hours doing some photos and head out for the surf later on, just waiting for the right tide.

Enjoy the photo gallery below from Snapper Rocks to Kirra:

{yoogallery src=[imagesstoriesblogsriders-on-the-storm] width=[85] height=[50]}

photos by Marcio Ferreira

The weather kept going crazy with flashes of sun light and rain from minute to minute but the waves ere there set after set. The surf contingent out there just increased after every set but the rip was so strong and so many waves that it didn't allow the crowd to gather together offering rides to every single surfer out there.

At firs Kirra was the spot to be but after the tide came in, Snapper started to look good, specially in front of Greenmount hill were barrels were just rolling through wave after wave. I saw that guy getting barreled 4 times in one wave.. in .. out ..in.. out.... in.. out .. in .. out... yeah, I know.. why did he get out of it in the first place.. but it was a really awesome ride.. good on ya mate...

Around midday i decided it was my turn to go out there and i have surfed for 3 hours paddling against the strong rip trying to stay at the right spot. It was better than i thought. I came back in to take a few more photos. The sun was coming out and i thought i would have some good light, but as i setup my tripod and stuff the weather kept changing, raining, rays of sun, cloudy really fast. Crazy!

The waves... yeah.. they were still there.. pumping!

Cheers!

Last saturday (13-08-2011) Lennox Heads had some nice 3 to 4 foot waves pumping all day.

After checking the forecast I decided to go down to Lennox Heads (NSW - Australia) to get the South swell that was going to hit the coast. Called a mate (Gustavo Wescher) and we headed down the famous point break. We checked from Byron Bay all the way to Boulders but the best spot was Lennox.

The surf looked nice and so we parked the car at the top of the hill and walked down to a nice surfing session action. I've got a few waves but after about 45 minutes my leg rope popped and I had to swim back in and deal with the rocks. All goo though. The problem was that I could not find my board!!! I was walking on the rocks and looking for it but no sign of it when a couple that was observing the waves from the path started yelling at me and pointing where it was. I didn't see it at first because I was hoping to find it crashing somewhere on the rocks but luckily it was floating somewhere on the inside still. That was a relief... I love that board!

After a cruise through the rocks I was almost there to get it but a set came and was just about to slam it against the rocks but this local surfer kid was right there and saved it for me. Champ mate!!! Thanks so much for that! We checked the board but no damages, it just suffered a small ding on the nose barely noticeable.

I walked back to the car and my mate Gustavo was still out there so I decided to grab my camera and take a few shots. Once I had gotten down there again I notice that amongst the freee surfers present at Lennox Heads that some Pro Surfers had just invaded the point and were shredding the waves. Amongst the pros were Joel Parkinson (current number one on the ASP Rankings), Kieren Perrow (ASP top surfer from Byron Bay) and Blake Ainsworth (from the Gold Coast). Besides some sponsored groms – the future generation – showed up also. Some real surfing spectacle was what I could watch including airs, hacks, floaters, barrels....

The rest of the story you can check with your own eyes on the photo gallery below:

Coal Seam Gas Mining is the biggest environmental disaster this country has

Coal Seam Gas Mining is the biggest environmental disaster this country has ever faced. Many people are unaware that it already threatens our water supplies, farm lands and lives!

There are over 1,000 gas wells in Queensland to date, with another 90,000 planned for QLD and NSW! Protestors gathered together in Broadbeach on Saturday to make a stand AGAINST more CSG mines and FOR other natural energy sources such as water, wind and solar energy.

{yoogallery src=[imagesstoriesblogscsg] width=[90] height=[53]}

photos by Grace Gutwein

We rallied together on Saturday at Broadbeach's Victoria Park in, sadly, what could be described as fairly dismal numbers for the Gold Coast, considering such a disaster is unfolding; just waiting in the wings (and in comparision to how many people turned up to the Pete Murray concert on the beach the week before). It just hasn't hit people yet; what is happening in the hills and valleys that surround us and the effects it will have on us all. If there ever was a time to band together it is NOW.

We need to step up and save our farming land, our water, our health and our lifestyles. The effects CSG mining will have on our environment and our futures is GAS-tronomical!!

Thousands of people gathered in Byron Bay and Illawarra recently to make a human sign on the beach in protest to CSG mining in the area. See photos of the protest against Coal Seam Gas mining in Byron Bay here. The month before Murwillumbah attracted the same kind of crowd, 3,000 protestors gathered to present a united front for the cause.

Unfortunately, numbers were less than impressive on the Gold Coast but it didn't dampen the spirits of the few hundred of us who took to marching up the Broadbeach Mall with our T-shirts and placades, handing out flyers and letting everyone know the truth about the so-called "clean burning fossil fuel of the future!"

The Lock the Gate Alliance reveals, "CSG produces more carbon emmissions than coal, it allows highly toxic chemicals to enter the water table, it uses enormous amounts of water to extract, and it produces massive amounts of toxic water; the land is degraded by clearing and toxic contamination, flora and fauna are sickened, killed and driven away by pollution and loss of habitat; all people in the vicinity of the mining operations will be affected by noise pollution 247 and their health threatened by toxic contamination of air and drinking water, and landowners will lose access rights to parts of their land."

In fact according to Lock the Gate "A mining company can come onto your land and rip it up, without your consent, without agreement, without compensation AND they can take legal action against YOU, but you are prevented from taking legal action against THEM! And if you try to stop them the Government can fine you up to $50,000. " And this was allegedly voted for by every QLD Labor and LNP politican! So, it doesnt really matter who is in power. We need people power. We can't drink gas and we can't eat coal.

The reason they are doing this is HUGE amounts of money. "They are letting FOREIGN COMPANIES (come on to our prescious farming land, which we all know has already suffered greatly from drought in recent years) to take our energy reserves to sell to FOREIGN COUNTRIES, who sell our fuel for 35 cents per litre, while we pay $1.50 for it!"

Once they find gas in a test well, then production begins. The company builds huge concrete pads and rigs at each well head, compressor stations, interconnecting pipelines, flood lighting, generators, huge evaporation ponds, fences, access roads and parking lots, and commercial production continues 247 for years (because hired machinery is expensive) until the gas supply is exhausted.

Currently, we disregard our abundance of natural energy and the quality of our technology to produce energy from wind, water and sun. "Within 6 hours the deserts of the world receive more energy than all of humanity consumes in 1 year!" Support the Zero Carbon Emmissions scheme. Why? I'll give you one more reason. Because currently the beef you eat is also under threat of becoming poisened. Cattle found in the vicinity of these mines have recently been found to have the chemicals used to extract the CSG!

How can you help? Join Lock the Gate Alliance and the Northern Rivers Guardians. The Alliance presents force in numbers! Tell your friends. It's a fight for all of humanity. Make sure you get your hands on a copy of Gasland the movie and get informed. And let your voice be heard.

Thanks for your time... : )

Andy Irons - Acute mixed drug ingestion?

Finally, 6 months after the death of 3x world champion Andy Irons, the final autopsy report was revealed to the surfing community and the world.

Irons was found dead on November 2, 2010, in a hotel room at the Dallas airport, but the release of the results of the autopsy was postponed twice in recent months. The New York Times got a copy of the official autopsy report, which concluded the 32-year-old died primarily of a heart attack, with the secondary cause listed as "acute mixed drug ingestion".

"This is a very simple case. Irons died of a heart attack due to coronary focus, ie, severe atherosclerosis, hardening of arteries. He had a plaque, producing 70 to 80 percent of its anterior descending coronary artery. This narrowing is very severe. A sign of this severity, located in the anterior descending coronary artery, is commonly associated with sudden death. " said Dr. Vincent Di Maio, a pathologist from San Antonio consulted and hired by the family. He said that "there were no other factors contributing to the death".

But for those who have followed Andy Irons career always had doubt about this report and an the speculation of an article from Outside magazine, who exposed the secret use of drugs. This speculation, it seems, was not unfounded. Chief Examiner of Tarrant County, Nizam Peerwani, MD, lists a second cause of death as "acute intoxication of mixed ingestion."

Irons family has accepted the official report and said Andy Irons had long suffered from mood orders and drug abuse.

"Andy was prescribed Xanax and Zolpidem (Ambien) to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia - a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by his family doctor at age 18," a statement said. "This is when Andy first began experiencing episodes of manic highs and depressive lows. The family believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance and tended to blame his mood swings on himself and his own weaknesses, choosing to self-medicate with recreational drugs."

Found Alprazolam (Xanax) and methadone in the system Irons, as well as benzoylecgonine, the Ph.D Gary H. Wimbish, forensic toxicologist consulted by the family, described as a bi-product of cocaine. Wimbish notes that the level of benzoylecgonine found in Irons system "is consistent with cocaine use in about 30 hours before his death."

Andy Irons was also diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, contracted typhoid fever, which may have damaged his heart. Di Maio reveals that levels of drugs found in Irons system were high enough to kill him.

"As we are not doctors, we have no choice but to accept that two respected pathologists reached different conclusions on a secondary cause that contributed to the death," reported the Irons family in a statement sent to the press.

The question here is: how long big brands, surfing media, organizations and whatevers will keep making idols out of people who won't be a good example for the sport and to the future generations? It is not only about who you are in the water, but who you are outside the water too.

Once you become famous, you have a huge responsibility over your fans attitude. Ronaldo (Brazilian soccer player) once got a haircut in a funny way during the world cup and next day on the street you could see a lot of people with the same funny looking haircut. How does pro surfers attitudes impact on our kids?

Some people say: "The kids wanting to follow Andy's example, they know the consequences. There's enough information out there about what drugs do . . . Andy Irons was sweet. He had a whole lot of demons and he did a lot of rotten things, but his life was sweet."

Isn't it time to to talk about the sport's drug-testing policy (it doesn't have one)?

I am a surfer since i was 8 years old and i am tired of all my life have been discriminated by the rest of the society as a beach bum who just want to surf all day and use drugs?

I am not trying to judge anyone but as Ben Harper once said on another one of his amazing songs:

"So excuse me Mr, but I'm a Mr too
And you're giving Mr a bad name, Mr like you
So im taking the Mr from out infront of your name
Coz it's the Mr like you that puts the rest of us to shame"

So please, i beg for those who can make it happen that we make idols out of those who really deserve to be our idols. Let's make a change on our so beloved sport for those who deserve to be on the spotlights by their surfing, their life style, and attitutdes in and out of the water.

Anyways, thank you Andy Irons for teaching us with your power fluid surfing and rest in peace!

Keep surfing, keep healthy, keep it clean!

It happened this past weekend (4-5 June 2011) a surfing championship held by invitation only by Back Wash and Lost at Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) in the State of Parana - Brazil.

The event was supposed to have four categories, but due to a large swell, which caused the beach breaks to be out of control, with big and messy waves it only had two categories: I'm surfing a lot and I only surf at the weekends.

The heats started on Saturday at Praia de Fora, and the beach was packed with friends, surfing and beautiful girls. Most of the heats were run on Saturday, leaving only the final heat to the following day. On the Saturday night the Grajagan lodge provided a party for the crowd and the vibe was sensational.

On Sunday, the swell increased evenmore and the beach breaks were out of control. Event organizers tried to bring the event to the Paralelas (Parallels Beach), but because of mullet fishing season, they did not het the authorization of the local fishermen. So the finals were held in the upper left of the Paraia Grande(Great Beach) in small waves that formed in currents in the corner of the beach coast.

Our photographer Douglas Cominski, who now resides in Brazil, got the trophy for the category I Surf on the weekends (good on ya mate, well done!).
